Editor-In-Chief
HARLINGEN, Texas - He was said to be the frontrunner, the applicant for the vacant police chief's job best suited for shaping the local department's present and future. But Department of Public Safety Lt. Rolando Castaneda opted for a similar job in smaller Edinburg some 25 miles west of this town.
It's par for the course in that world of bureaucrats and elected officials. We posed the question to our well-placed source at Harlingen City Hall and here's what we were told: "I'm sure he would have been an exceptional employee, but applicant fall out is part of what happens. We experienced withdrawals while considering applicants for the city manager position as well, and we were still able to land a very competent and professional city manager, in Carlos (Yerena)."
Someone will get the job, maybe even someone currently in the interim chief's post. But few are talking, at least not the ones who know something concrete. Reports surfaced in early March that Yerena was interested in keeping the interim chief as a cost-cutting measure. We doubt that is an over-riding reason, however. The city has a slew of veteran officers who likely can man the fort while the city ponders its pool of chief applicants.
In the meantime, yes, the force is left to wonder who its next leader will be. That is never a good thing in anything to do with military-style duties, but, as we said, it's par for the course.
Who knows? Castaneda, shown in photo above wearing a cowboy hat, might have been the answer to the department's P.R. problems. But, then again, maybe not. It's always a crapshoot when hiring in law enforcement. The bar is often too low, especially in the Rio Grande Valley. One thing is certain: Harlingen should look to hiring an educated officer, someone with a college degree and extensive experience, someone who knows the difference between merely holding the job and serving the community, someone who is a professional lawman...

Nice story. To the point. thanks. maybe we need more analysis of our news around here. the Trib does it very well. As for Chapaneco, now it's just him on that lousy cheap blog. There is a God!!!

ReplyDeleteYerena doesn't think, he takes forever to hire someone. He moves to slow. The word at the puzzle palace at 118 East Tyler is that, the city is trying to save money.

City hall, needs a police chief from the outside.
I hope Yerena, stays away from Tonie Chapi's blog, because that blog all it does is screw things up. Maybe the new police chief can open the Chapa murder investigation.
Glad to see that our buddy jake came to his senses. Anybody who blogs with Chapaneco will be seen as a hater and racist. Listening Kenneth Benton? Harlingen needs better media and better bloggers. We're lucky to have the Trib and Jerry Deal's blog.

Agree with anonymous about Rios Ybarra. She had a chance to do something good and she blew it. Lost an election for a variety of weird reasons, didn't she? that's the story, boys and girls. sad, but true. So long, tara.
ReplyDeleteHarlingen does need a better educated chief. this police department has a major problem because citizens see it a sbeinga mess. Something has to happen within the department as a whole, not just hiring a new chief. Maybe we need better cops on the streets. just an idea.
ReplyDeleteLuis/Harlingen; Maybe the city ought to offer buy outs, for the cops that have been there for awhile. I agree, some of the police officers have no loyalty. Some police officers are using a local rumor mill blog to vent out rumors and innuendo.

Harlingen has good police officers, they just need better structure, and some counseling, and new leadership.

Liza, Chapaneco is history on his blog too! the guy self-destructed beautifully. He just tangled with the wrong blog. The Tribune is way above the clouds compared to Chapaneco. and that's not an insult to Chapa but it's a damned fact. LOL!!!

wow! Chapaneco is begging for comments? From Kenneth Benton? Benton better watch out. people will associate his name with Chapa and that is not good. But he asked for it. Chapa has no one to blame but himself. he made himself the ugly duckling. Just my opinion.
