AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

In Reynosa, A Public Works Bureaucrat is Gunned Down...

By SEYMOUR HERSH
Special to The Tribune

REYNOSA, Mexico - It goes on. Another day, another killing. This time it was a public official. Who know who it'll be today?

Yesterday afternoon, crime-weary authorities found the body of Reynosa Public Works Director Roberto Arechandieta Ramos seated in a white Chevrolet Cheyenne, his bloodied body full of bullet holes, said a spokesman for Mexico’s attorney general.

Arechandieta's end came after years of work in law enforcement that included stints as a federal agent with the now-defunct Federal Judicial Police, as a high-ranking Tamaulipas state police officer and as a supervisor under Mexico’s Secretariat of Public Security.

Cops here declined to speculate on a motive for the killing or to lay blame on any individual or group. Reynosa, like other Northern Mexico bordertowns, has been the scene of numerous wanton killings associated with drug cartel territorial warfare. The solution appears to be as elusive as a border woman's hunt for a non-abusive husband. Hopeless, in other words...

Mr. Editor: I was glad to read on your side bar, about San Benito and Harlingen, of your blog. You should advertise on the newspapers about your blog.
Is Duardo P. Martinez really running for Mayor??? Good, maybe Mr. Ahumada will get the message that it is time for him to go.

ANON & Third Eye: ...We have rumblings of a move by DP-M to Brownsville, butu have bene tiold an official announcement is pending. He is, however, on good terms with the editor of myharlingennews.com, so perhaps he felt it was a good-enough venue. We expect him to do it in a public venue, BTW. (2.) We have no idea who you refer to as "Bobby Loco," but suspect that DP-M wouldn't be doing this if he thought he had anyone with the mental capacity to challenge him. You should know that he is squeaky clean, and that is what will turn Brownsvile from its present state of socio-political disarray into a veritable oasis... - Editor

All:...Sorry for the typos in that last message. My breakfast arrived a bit late on my desk and I was unfolding a bacon & egg taco from El Pato as I replied to the earlier comments. I know, I know. It is inexcusable. Just look at it as our annual ElRrunRrun moment... - Editor

Bobby Loco was a Dustin Hoffman Rainman type of freak who used to ride around on a bike in the Palm Lounge area. Did not drink. Though he was pretty scary looking. Supposedly choked on food while having a "rainman" type attack about 10-15 years ago.

ANON: New name for us. Bobby Loco, eh? Sounds like a RainMan character, yes. But the guy likely had some redeeming qualities.... - Editor

Redeeming qualities for Bobby Loco? Really do not think so. You'd have to have seen him to know what I mean. But how about Pipe? Now that is someone you really need to find out about. He also rode a bike, and the boy would ride it to the Palm Lounge, and get plastered. He's now sitting at a table somewhere, with Bobby Loco.
