AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

For Americans, A Day For Football & Politics...Today From Coast-to-Coast...

By PATRICK ALCATRAZ

AUSTIN, Texas - So, what's your taste going to be: rough, tough gang-tackling at the country's billion-dollar stadium for the pro football national championship or a looksee into the lavish celebration of former President Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday? Both take place today.

In the bedroom community of Arlington, tucked there between Dallas and Fort Worth, it'll be the hated Pittsburgh Steelers against the equally-hated Green Bay Packers at Cowboys Stadium only a 90-yard pass from Six Flags Over Texas. We say hated because both teams have been nightmares over the years for the local Dallas Cowboys.

In California's Simi Valley, Republicans will gather to honor a dead president they say stands for what conservatives believe in, nevermind that there have been a few other Republicans who have not seen their party throw such a spare-no-expense, multi-million dollar soiree on their behalf. As Democratic startegist Paul Begala put it in a story published by the New York Times yesterday, "Reagan holds unique status today because the Republicans don't have anyone else. They can't lionize Eisenhower because, by today's standards, he was a liberal. They can't lionize Nixon because he was a criminal. Who have they got left?"

According to write-ups, it'll be a Who's Who of GOPers attending that party, including Texas Gov. Rick Perry who has opted out of the football drama in Arlington. Expect most 2012 Republican Party presidential hopefuls to be seen and heard at the Reagan bash.

But for true-blue football fans, what will feed the late-afternoon adrenaline will be the bull-rushes of former Texas Longhorn Casey Hampton as he plows through the Packer offensive line to corral Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers and anyone he spots in the Packer backfield.

On offense, the black-clad Steelers will unleash controversial QB Ben Roethlisberger, he of the multiple rape accusations, and No. 86, receiver Hines Ward, said to be the dirtiest player in the National Football League. The Pack will counter with their own misfits, including hefty defensive lineman T.J. Raji, a 300-plus manmountain with the rushing speed of a crazed polar bear. Defensive End Clay Matthews, whose father and grandfather played in the NFL, is no slouch. He makes vicious Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher look like a Pachuco offspring lineman for the lowly Brownsville Porter high school squad.

This game looks to be a defensive battle, although sportswriters say they see a wide-open shootout, mainly because the game will be played indoors on the Cowboys Stadium's fast turf. Who knows, but the Packers have been lighting up the scoreboard on their way to the Big Game. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, storms in off a tight victory over the beloved New York Jets.

Whatever happens, it should be a wild, rolling cantina brawl between the lines.

Neither of these teams was on our Finals list, although, being die-hard pro football fans for decades, we have followed the two squads as they rolled through the playoffs. We won't predict a final score, as our prediction record is woeful this season. We had the Bears and Jets in the Super Bowl.

Still, the Big Game promises to bring viewers a better ending than will the Reagan gala, where things will dissolve into overly-emotional testimonials about how great Reagan was, endless huggings of frail Nancy Reagan and a speech by Mrs. Reagan about how much he did for America, and about how much she misses him.

Football fans really aren't into that stuff.

Not on Super Bowl Sunday...

Freezing here, but waiting on the game. Sorry to say but Steelers will take it, 35-21.

Don't think anybody in the valley will care about the reagan thing. Sorry. just the way it is.

Can't wait for the game. tired of this ice stuff. Not normal around here. Going with the Pack!

You should look into Harlingen's Tent City. It is disgraceful and not one comment from city leaders. Not one! Maybe they don't even know it's there. shame, shame!

Ronald Reagen, was in acting mode during his 8 years as President. Besides his wife used the Weege-board to schedule meetings.
Steelers win, Rapisberger and his criminals will win. Don't get me wrong, I CAN'T STAND THE STEELERS.

The meeting was cancelled today, because of the weather. The Mayor will not be speaking to the rotarians.

Look, tent city is doing well and people are not walking out. It is cold out there. The Mayor is keeping real quiet on the issue.

That astronuat dude is an inspiration. I don't know that I would have taken the shooting of my wife with so much grace. Proud of him.

Maybe the mayor should take a walk out to Tent City. How he can let this happen in Harlingen is shameful. Go out there, mayor Boswell! If you care.

It's noon and still crazy here. I thought we were a tropical region! Tent City? man, how do those poor people do it? Has to be tough and the city does nothing. The mayor should be impeached for allowing this misery!

The mayor won't go to Tent City. It is beneath him. He's probbaly over at the country club, eating himself to sleep. Someone should offer to drive him down F Street.

There were about 5 tents yesterday yesterday, couldn't see past beyond the blue tents. But I understand there are more. Saw some people taking food and items prior to the cool weather.
Pince Mayor, giving speaches to his good richie buddies. Cabron, bueno para nada.

Hey, I haven't seen any of the Harlingen Commissioners visiting tent city either. Tent city is on Jerry's Prep, district. Common Jerry, make a statement.

Well, now that the sun is shinning someone, from the elected officials will drive around town and assess damages.
Wait I must be dreaming.

Good post Mr. Editor, good story, good comments from the bloggers, by the comments, looks like many are unhappy with our elected Mayor, Chrissy Boswell. Guys, he just got elected last May, have a long way to go. Que triste esta la ocassion

ANONYMOUSES:...It's hard to believe that a Tent City could sprout and be mainatined inside any city limits. The Valley has its awful colonias, but those always can be found in the counties. Harlingen looks really bad in this light. Surely, the city officials will work to move these people to better ground. It should not stand, not if Harlingen as a community has any pride. The mayor ought to be held accountable... - Editor

We seem to get all the downers these days. Little tells us we'll see better days ahead. Boswell speaking to the elite is part of that. He does not unite Harlingen. Some politician.

I feel so bad for the astronaut, Mr. Kelly and I hope there is justice for the animal who shot his wife in Arizona. He looks to be a good man. Why are we such a mean nation. And that Tent City in Harlingen is wrong, just wrong. that mayor needs to be educated in public service.

what I notice is that the Tribune has the best stories of all of our Blogs. And the comments are intelligent. I hate to see some people trashing each other or writing stupidities. Thanks, Tribune!

let's hope that tent City is gone this weekend. It looks bad for us. We're god people being made to look bad by useless city officials. The town should get angry at this mess. You know it's true.

Steelers 31 Packers 14 / Don't think the Packers will run on Pittsburhg's defense. Plus Packers have not been to Super Bowl lately. But we'll see.

I agree, the steelers will win. As much as I despise their quarterback.

Packers! 41 to 28 in a wild shotout. I know it sounds crazy, but what the heck. Big football fan here. sorry to see the season end.

Prostitution in Dallas, it can't be. I thought most of the prostitutes walk at la placita in Harlingen. The word around town, is that you get anything you want for $20.00.
What is this $20.00 thing, the Rotarians are charging a big $20 smakers to hear the Mayor make some silly speech, full of untruths. I hear they want everybody all dressed up. Just to listen to Chris Boswell, I don't think so.

Still thinking about it, but I think Green Bay will win 21-7. They manhandled the Bears.

Hey, tomorrow is the day, get your pop corn, and some nice bruskies, or wine or wild turkey, whatever turns you on. Drink and be marry.

Anonymous said...

Counting down. Gametime, baby! Packers 34-17 over Steelers.

Anonymous said...

It is getting closer by the minute. I can't hardly wait, it is going to be a good high scoring game.

Anonymous said...

Lotta talk before the game on TV. But Pack will blow out the Steelers. 44-7. I know. I see the future.

Anonymous said...

Hard to say which team will win. Momentum is what it's allabout. A big lead may come for either team, but defense will will win.

Well the Pack won, congratulations, good high scoring game. Rapisberger, back to jail.
