AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

Making Friends: Tony Gray And The Temple Of Doom...Singing For The Plump Partridge...

By PATRICK ALCATRAZ
Special to The Tribune

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - They meet every now and then in an unmarked building downtown, a loose affiliation of journalists and gadflies with only one thing in mind: clean up this drowsy bordertown. And even rarer are the gains they make in advancing progress here. Topics come up and beer is bucketed on the battered tabletops, remnants of another era in local furniture.

The South Texas Independent Journalists Association (STIJA) does not suffer fools. Harlingen bloggers, for example could never be members. As founder Dr. G.F. McHale put it the other day, "You need to have worked for a newspaper or been jailed or been divorced. Not everybody gets admission."

One of those chartered fellows was almost bumped-out last week, when McHale hinted that Tony Gray, who once wrote for The Brownsville Herald and now serves as loyal aide to State Rep. Rene "The Plump Partridge" Oliveira, might be kicked out of the organization. The reason? Oliveira's decision to side by the president of the local university in a lingering fight that centers on the junior college splitting from the four-year school.

STIJA saw that as betrayal. Oliveira, it seems, has been one of those darlings protected by the association in recent years. The usually unflappable Gray has said nothing about the school controversy or his tenuous membership in the respected association. Will he? Not likely.

Will McHale continue to torch him via his Blog, Brownsville Literary Review? No question.

Friends are the easiest of chumps to beat up on the Internet. One knows more about friends than strangers, so material looms as if an endless supply of arrows for the bow. The well-fed Gray has a long tapeworm of a story trailing him related to boozing and debauchery in general when in the company of STIJA members. He has, as they say in good westerns, taken the stagecoach's reins a time or two as it barreled toward the cliffs of errant romance and wanton adultery. Life in this town is funny that way. One day you're King of the anthill, the next you're the anthill itself. Sing a song for Tony Gray. Something by Petula Clark or Rigo Tovar.

We're sort of indifferent to most of it. Gray's membership in STIJA was sealed a long time ago in that midnight This-is-where-we-slice-your-wrist ritual the organization requires. So, he's going nowhere.

But I will take this opportunity to say The Plumpster needs to go. He has served his pals and himself for too long. STIJA needs to come out against this lifetime abuser of the public trough...

Ignoring Chapa is the best weapon against that selfish, egotistical Dwarf. He needs attention and your decision will help us get rid of him.

Screw the Pakistanis! If they had done their job and just given up Bid Laden, they wouldn't be crying. But I bet those "cheek in tongue" cry babies would take U.S. money when we give it to them? They are number 1 in collection call centers, right?

As Bill Maher said, "when you speak of racism, its always the Republicans."

Roy said...

It was wrong for those 10 repubicans in the legislatuure to diss the president. Totally wrong! jesus, whatever happened to brains? how can they sleep?

Anonymous said...

Hey, Roy, it's par for the Republicans. They'been the party of NO forever. where were their NOs when Baby Bush was in office?

Anonymous said...

Republicans who are not wealthy are merely hanging on to he rich people's skirts, thinking they too are not among the poor. Democrats are the ones who pass social services laws that help the poor. whites take more of the food stamps money if you check the states. If you look around, Republicans want to end everything the poor need. Yes, we're not a socialist country, but we're al Americans. Or is there a difference? You think George W. Bush cares about you? No, he doesn't. President Obama represents a more honest world.

ALL:...We again thank you for your intelligent comments. I want to make this clear - whatever criticism is aimed at the Republican Party here is deserved. It does not mean that we demean our system, nor does it mean that it is only Republicans soiling the country. But a very good case can be made that Republicans use and spread fear as a way to rally their way of Life. America is many things. Its citizens are free to choose the direction of their lives. Republicans do not like that. They want everyone to assimilate to the American Way, which means their way. A Free America is the best America and the time for what the Republicans are now selling has come and gone... - Editor

A lot of Rednecks on Jerry Deal's blog today. They say they are conservatives but they are extreme about their comments. I can read right through their words.

I don't know what I enjoy more. The articles or the comments on Chapa. Don't know the man nor do I care to know him. I've seen his pathetic web site and I am not impressed with his writing or lack of it. I can tell when he tries to write he does a lot of cut and paste from other sources. As for Eduardo Paz-Martinez, keep up the interesting articles. CCC
