AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

For Harlingen, Castaneda's Withdrawal From Chief's Post Leads To Speculation...Big Deal, Or No Big Deal?...

By EDUARDO PAZ-MARTINEZ
Editor-In-Chief

HARLINGEN, Texas - He was said to be the frontrunner, the applicant for the vacant police chief's job best suited for shaping the local department's present and future. But Department of Public Safety Lt. Rolando Castaneda opted for a similar job in smaller Edinburg some 25 miles west of this town.

Some went ahead and applauded Castaneda's decision, while others lamented the loss.

It's par for the course in that world of bureaucrats and elected officials. We posed the question to our well-placed source at Harlingen City Hall and here's what we were told: "I'm sure he would have been an exceptional employee, but applicant fall out is part of what happens. We experienced withdrawals while considering applicants for the city manager position as well, and we were still able to land a very competent and professional city manager, in Carlos (Yerena)."

Yerena is the city manager here, having been hired from a similar post in Kingsville. He, too, has received criticism for not filling the job in a timely manner. Earlier this month, after former Chief Danny Castillo resigned amid perceived pressure from Yerena and some city commissioners in mid-February, Harlingen said it counted 22 applicants for the Top Cop job.

Someone will get the job, maybe even someone currently in the interim chief's post. But few are talking, at least not the ones who know something concrete. Reports surfaced in early March that Yerena was interested in keeping the interim chief as a cost-cutting measure. We doubt that is an over-riding reason, however. The city has a slew of veteran officers who likely can man the fort while the city ponders its pool of chief applicants.

In the meantime, yes, the force is left to wonder who its next leader will be. That is never a good thing in anything to do with military-style duties, but, as we said, it's par for the course.

A chief will be selected in due time.

Who knows? Castaneda, shown in photo above wearing a cowboy hat, might have been the answer to the department's P.R. problems. But, then again, maybe not. It's always a crapshoot when hiring in law enforcement. The bar is often too low, especially in the Rio Grande Valley. One thing is certain: Harlingen should look to hiring an educated officer, someone with a college degree and extensive experience, someone who knows the difference between merely holding the job and serving the community, someone who is a professional lawman...

Nice story. To the point. thanks. maybe we need more analysis of our news around here. the Trib does it very well. As for Chapaneco, now it's just him on that lousy cheap blog. There is a God!!!

castaneda would have been good for Harlingen. what was Yerena thinking? we'll probably get seconds now. Wow!!!

Anonymous said...

Yerena doesn't think, he takes forever to hire someone. He moves to slow. The word at the puzzle palace at 118 East Tyler is that, the city is trying to save money.
That is the problem, when they hired DAn Castillo, no degree, just expierence and a clicka.
City hall, needs a police chief from the outside.
I hope Yerena, stays away from Tonie Chapi's blog, because that blog all it does is screw things up. Maybe the new police chief can open the Chapa murder investigation.

Glad to see that our buddy jake came to his senses. Anybody who blogs with Chapaneco will be seen as a hater and racist. Listening Kenneth Benton? Harlingen needs better media and better bloggers. We're lucky to have the Trib and Jerry Deal's blog.

On the teens in prison, well paying child support is good but it's really the taxpayer paying it, isn't it? Never fails. Oh, well.

Get the partents to pay for the trouble teen, it is their responsibility to raise good kids, why should we pay, it isn't our kids. Jail Teen sounds good to me.

Hector, I agree, less and less comments on the hateful blog. The word in the street; Tonie is always making fun of Joe Rubio's weight, well some cops saw him and his chola, and she is,"Huge", big ass lard cholona.
So now we know the rest of the story.

Good post as always.

Tara Rio should be thanking her lucky stars. something happened and she got off the charges. and we'll never know. did she take medicaid money that she shouldn't have taken? Was it given back? que paso, Tara?

Anonymous said...

Mr. Paz-Martinez, Tara Rios is finished, she was convicted in the court of public opinion.
Her voting record was that of a Republican, dressed in a Democratic suit. Maybe the McAllen dentist took the blame, no one really knows.

Agree with anonymous about Rios Ybarra. She had a chance to do something good and she blew it. Lost an election for a variety of weird reasons, didn't she? that's the story, boys and girls. sad, but true. So long, tara.

Harlingen does need a better educated chief. this police department has a major problem because citizens see it a sbeinga mess. Something has to happen within the department as a whole, not just hiring a new chief. Maybe we need better cops on the streets. just an idea.

Luis/Harlingen; Maybe the city ought to offer buy outs, for the cops that have been there for awhile. I agree, some of the police officers have no loyalty. Some police officers are using a local rumor mill blog to vent out rumors and innuendo.
Yerena, needs to get with commission and offer early retirements and clean out the police dept.
Harlingen has good police officers, they just need better structure, and some counseling, and new leadership.

So Mr. name dropper, did you replaced the Lumi-nox watch??
Not that I care, but things like this usually happen, to pompous, egotistic, lack of accoutability flawed individuals.
Please save us all poor people with your over reacting comments.
I bet Yangi, is enjoying the $300.00 she got for the watch, one of many, by your own accounts, private guide tour, sing a river to the bloggers.

Mr. Paz-Martinez, once again, leading in comments, one editorial, good for you, good things happen to good people.
Well said, Harlingen, lost a good opportunity.

Alice, don't be so hard on the styling and profiling man.

Late again this morning, but good article and great comments. Harlingen better get a good chief this time. Too much bad news coming out if that town. Tara Rios was damned lucky. how much we don't know. Pobre mujer. Perdio todo!

ALL:...We have long used the Main Story as our principal daily post, with the idea being that it is the "Topic of The Day" for reader comments. We have, however been looking at posting shorter stories, vignettes with photos, and may try it one of these days. Once more, thanks for your thoughtful comments... - Editor

The Trib is fine just the way it is. maybe change it a little if you have to. But its still the best. no question about it. Good articles and best comments around. Thankz.

Agree with anon and los Fresnos, good articles, good friendly atmosphere. A blog for adults and used by adults. Thanx.

Tara Rios, fell from Grace, after the local paper listed a divorce suit. About her, her kids and a traveling companion. Women turned on her.
Oh well, such is life.

Hey, Mr. paz, is that a hispanic man being harassed by the state trooper in austin. Bet it is.

Patrick Alcatraz said...

ANON:...The young man being harangued by the state trooper was identified as Joey Gonzalez, said to be in his 20s. The incident happened aboard a city bus in Austin. The DPS trooper was indicted today... - Editor

Mr. Editor, you have out gunned the Harlingen blogs, hey, I like that film feature on your blog, nice, very Nice.
By the way Melissa Vega, is no longer on channel four, I guess they got rid of Aunt B.

Roy said...

yeah, killer video on the Nazi DPS trooper. He got what he deserved. Now hopefully he'll be convicted and kicked out of the force. es un abusivo!

Mr. Brownsville said...

Chapaneco posted a headline with no story. Wow!!! Is that guy slow or what? Never heard of that happening. somebody get him a book on journalism! LOL!!!

Anonymous said...

Heard that a Harlingen city commissioner recently lost his job at the Brownsville Herald. That could be a good story.

Hector said...

Anon, that commissioner would be Jerry Prepejchal. He has worked for the Herald newspaper for many years. Hope not. Poor guy.

Anonymous said...

Is this Judge Limas related to the former BPD detective Lupe Limas? Anyone know?

Ralph said...

I think it may be his son.But maybe one of our Brownsville bloggers knows for sure. Tough break for the judge. racketeering is not good news for him or his family. Poor dude.

Anonymous said...

Hey, Mr. Paz, I went to The Brownsville Herald's webpage and looked in the staff list. Jerry prepejchal's photo is not there. Guess he is gone, not that it matters a whole lot. Jobs come and go. Or maybe Prepejchal just retired.

Liza said...

Mr. Brownville, I think Chapanenco is history on this blog. For all we care he could dancing with his big fat cholona, nalgas de manteca, and none of the bloggers here could care.
Life is better without him.

Mr. Brownsville said...

Liza, Chapaneco is history on his blog too! the guy self-destructed beautifully. He just tangled with the wrong blog. The Tribune is way above the clouds compared to Chapaneco. and that's not an insult to Chapa but it's a damned fact. LOL!!!

The writing was on the wall, as the Trib's editor, wrote.
He has a total of four comments, I hear he tried to be friend one of the cops he criticizes about his weight. The joke at El taquito this morning was, that la chola could hardly walk because she is so obese.
Dumb ass, throwing stones like a fool. Many of cops can't stand his ass.

One story, over 5 comments in less than an hour, Deals blog. Yep, your time is up. Even Benton writes very little, and I hear he ask him for help, to see if he could revive his dead rag online service. No dies, no one is buying.
Even Kingi Canute, quit blogging there, well the last time I heard Kingi was in route to Hawaii and Vegas, what a life.

Anonymous said...

wow! Chapaneco is begging for comments? From Kenneth Benton? Benton better watch out. people will associate his name with Chapa and that is not good. But he asked for it. Chapa has no one to blame but himself. he made himself the ugly duckling. Just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

Hey there's a new blogger on Chapaneco's site, a guy going by Ray Traskuskus. I thought Chapa complained about fake bloggers. And it reads like the stuff Jake used to blog there. Is Jake trying to get the editor of The Tribune angry? Looks like it.

Roselyn said...

I think Jackle is Mr. Brownsville man, blogging here, very similiar accelerated wording.
And the LOL signature. Chapis will accept anyone, right now he is desperate. Pobrecito.
By the way, there are no fake bloggers here. Some just blog more than others.

Anonymous said...

Who was the idiot, who posted that racist blog here last night. It looks to me like the friends of Jackle and Mr. Hyde are trying to invade the Trib.
I saw something very similiar in the BLR, and I was right, Isidro is Jackal.
Same nasty stuff, I think that guy has a screw missing, loser.

Patrick Alcatraz said...

ANON:...We saw the stupid, childish comment and removed it immediately. We suspect that it is our old friend Jake, and we again warn him that he is risking much. We will continue to monitor comments we receive and trust that our bloggers respond in kind to these miscreants... - Editor

Mr. Brownsville said...

Good job, Mr. Paz. Keep The Trib as it is. Good comments from good people, not idiots like on Chapaneco's dead blog. LOL!!!
