AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

The Rise And Fall Of Jim Solis:...A Tale Of Fast Money, Fast Justice, Fast Jets and Maybe Fast Broads...

By EDUARDO PAZ-MARTINEZ
Editor-In-Chief

HARLINGEN, Texas - They say Attorney Jim Solis lived the Great Cockroach Life; that is, he believed he lived and worked with vermin, slogging through the muck of corruption like a champ, with the best of them. A state representative for the better part of his adult life, Jose Santiago "Jimmy" Solis did his best to play the "You scratch my balls, I'll scratch your balls" game at the courthouse.

He's going to prison after admitting this week to handing over Big Cash to former 404th State District Judge Abel Limas in exchange for favorable rulings on cases Solis had before the judge's bench. It's yet another local fall from lawyerly grace, the latest in a tapeworm of similar officers-of-the-court-gone-bad. Solis looked lost in court during his pleading on Friday. Accompanied by his priest, he acted as if at a pre-wedding ritual at the local Catholic Church, there in the company of his pretty wife who looked stoic, but utterly disappointed.

A priest at a pleading. You'd think that same priest would have looked much better outside the Main Gate of a state prison on the day Solis completes his jail sentence. Religion, they say, always looks like a winner when one is in trouble or behind bars. Bible verses help pass the long string of days. It's good to know them by heart, in fact. That oath a lawyer takes in which he promises loyalty to the law won't serve you behind bars. Solis is about to see the night turn darker, foreboding. Cockroaches in prison are a wilder breed.

What led him down the path of humiliating corruption only he and his lawyer know at this point. Well, maybe his wife, although, all bets would be off with her if he gets a lengthy sentence. He'll cry when she says she's leaving him, and he'll cry harder when she tells him there's another man - a free one - in the picture. It's the stuff of books and TV, and, in those, the wife left behind always seeks warmth in someone who is available, not the hubby dressed in stripes. Solis has 90 days to think about that before receiving his sentence, to wonder why he ever went wrong, to keep kicking himself in the ass for being an idiot, and to hope for the most leniency possible.

It's an interesting, serpentine case all the way around. Limas is headed for the hoosegaw, as well, as are a few other lawyers yet to be walked into local courts. All for money, because of greed, and perhaps because they believed they could get away with it in the quirky Rio Grande Valley, a region where lawyers like to think they are far enough away from civilization that they are their own law.

The next Big Question is this: What about District Attorney Armando Villalobos? Where does he stand on all of these cases that fell apart in the merry deal-making? Why did he not raise a peep when questionable rulings poured out of Limas' court like free beer at a local political pachanga? Is he in the mix? Will the Feds smoke him out? And is that death in Matamoros a month ago of Assistant D.A. Arturo Jose Iniguez related to any of this? Was the young lawyer about to burst the corruption bubble? Was his death really a suicide?

To many questions move across the local geography to allow anyone the notion of believing all the crooks have been fingered, found and arrested. Big money answers only to big money.

And, surely, there has to be a "woman angle" here. Latinos and corruption cash are only two-thirds of the equation, if history is any indication. There are broads in this story. There are topless bar expenses disguised as client conferences, escort services listed as hours-to-be-billed. This is South Texas. Women are always in the picture. Judge Limas is said to have been fond of flying out from time to time in private jets, to pro basketball games in San Antonio and Houston. A pit stop at an all-nude Gentleman's Club would have been right up his cultural alley. A long night of wanton sex with out-of-town women in some ritzy hotel would have been just another decision to be made, no biggie, no sweat. It's the mind of the criminal, see. Once you head down that road, well, you take what you need and to Hell with the law. Go out the back way, honey. Don't let anyone see you. Here's a grand, kid.

What sayeth the Feds about all that?

It's all coming out soon...

Good article. Of course there are broads! It's lawyers. They think they are invincible. Limas would do it. Solis has a good looking wife, but, hey, throw a pretty broad in the sack and anything goes. LOL!!!

So the mental midget is crying for attention again. What happened? Somebody moved his portable commode away from his keyboard and instead of copying other people's BS, he managed to have an accident of his own and now his poor wife has to come home and clean him up. Oh well at least he's going to have to get up off his ass long enough for her to clean it.

Well, Jimmy Solis was buying quiet a bit of property in Harlingen. Some of us wondered why he was getting so much money. He bought some real good land in high traffic areas and developed them well. I have friends that are attorneys and don't do that well.
Well what goes around comes around.

Kiko, maybe he likes to have his ass kicked. you know one of his bloggers used to write about having Tony Chapa's wife naked in the backseat of his Ford. Maybe Tony liked seeing her in action. I think he may have.

He lets his wife support him and he attacks The Tribune editor cause he wants attention from someone better. the cops are going to get him one of these days. press release, press release, press release. ha ha ha

I think you are right. Chapaneco attacks because he is jealous of The Tribune. It's the only time he gets comments. HE POSTED SIX IN ONE TRIBUNE ATTACK! If that isn't a sign of his stupidity nothing is. Keep kicking his dwarf butt!

Cable Guy said...

Just ignore his tired ass! Tony Chapa is not in your class or league as a man or as a writer. Why bother with that flea brain?

Anonymous said...

It's the weekend. here are no pres releases for the idiot. So he attacks the Tribune. Chapa is being his usual ass$#@e self. Pendejo. He is hated, hated, hated. Get a REAL job, maricon!

Blogger M said...

Be careful Chapa. One of these days someone is going to report your wife to social services for leaving you home alone and unsupervised. You obviously are no longer capable of rational judgement and should be under professional care. I guess we can all understand why she doesn't allow you to go out in public, much less work for a living. Even being a Walmart greeter might be too much for you. If she hasn't already, she needs to take away the scissors with the pointy ends that you use for your cut and paste work. That could be an endangerment charge against her. Also they will need to do a blood test to see if you've been ingesting that paste. That could be why your rather limited supply of brain cells is dwindling (although it could be that you're suffering from terminal stupidity). If you just wouldn't be so blatant about your ignorance, she probably could have kept you hidden at home with no one the wiser but no, you keep insisting on proclaiming it loud and proud and you are becoming a public nuisance just like a barking dog or those people who don't clean up the doggy-do left in other people's yards. One of these days she is going to figure out that all she has to do is unplug your keyboard and take it to work with her. Maybe we should take up a collection and make it worthwhile for her to do so. In the meantime, Tony, watch out for anyone coming to the door dressed like an ambulance attendant. Peek through the curtains first and see if they are driving something that looks like the animal control truck. It's not going to do you any good to hide under the computer desk. Try not to cry or drool as they take you away as it will only convince them that they are doing the right thing. Maybe they'll let you make copies of the institutional newsletter for distribution. Remember, you brought it all on yourself.

M, he doesn't have the brains to understand what you wrote! Chapaneco is strictly elementary school material. No vale sebo. He is like the fat kid in the neighborhood who always went crying to his mother! Pendejo No. 1!!!

Think: Sylvia Handy, Conrado Cantu, Gene Falcon, Brigg Marmolejo, and now A.Limas, Jim Solis, and God knows how many more.
Fellows, once more than two people know, it is not a secret anymore.

Jim Solis, like Abel Limas got greedy, Limas was a cop, Jim got a little arrogant, and started flaunting his money. I wonder if he can sued.
No need to add more stress to his life and his family. In Jail you will have plenty of time to think about it.

Bottom line, Jim Solis got greedy and knew that Abel Limas could be bought? With that thought, Solis desecrated the public trust of all those who knew him as a friend, family man and trusted politician? I don't feel for him since he brought all this on himself. I just hope that he does do jail time so he can really think about what he did and the trust he betrayed to all who knew him! Solis obviously never considered his family when he did this and should not have been allowed to be out on a fine? Just because he paid $250K, doesn't mean he bought himself out of trouble? At least I hope not! An example needs to be made on all these crooks so the next elected official or someone wanting to corrupt the system has second thoughts before doing it! God Bless America!
