AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

Tiger Shark: In Deep South Texas, It Is The Politics Of The Sea...The Bigger Bite Always Wins...

By RICARDO KLEMENT
Special to The Tribune

HARLINGEN, Texas - Grudges are a huge part of the local social tapestry, and nowhere does it manifest itself more than in the world of politics. It is a strange and killing mix of cojones-swaggering and mind-blowing paybacks. You just don't go against a Rio Grande Valley politician if that same geography is your geography, if the other politician is still in office, especially.

Someone called Joe Santiago "Jim" Solis after that bizarre court appearance in which Solis admitted his guilt in bribing disgraced former 404th District Court Judge Abel Limas and told him local State Sen. Eddie Lucio was going to rid the landscape of anything Solis. Lucio, shown in photo at right, was said to be livid that Solis had engaged in the bribing, but others said the move came as a result of petty rivalry digs each had lobbed at the other when Solis had served a portion of this county as state representative.

Now, Lucio was coming after Solis by filing a bill in the State Legislature to remove the name of Jim Solis from the South Texas Health Care System building in Harlingen. It was at once both payback and a chance to flex a bit of political muscle. Lucio was still in office; Solis was awaiting sentencing.

In the world of Valley politics, such a move is predictable and expected. Emotions rule the day. Words are said and exchanged. Feelings are ruffled. Mothers are damned. It is part of the sport. The concept of Top Dog is ingrained in the local game. State senator trumps state representative. Solis, shown in photo below with his wife, is said to have shrugged his shoulders at hearing of Lucio's move, perhaps seeing it as lesser of a worry than the very distinct possibility that he is going to jail later this summer.

Life is tough in every other aspect of life along the scurrilous Texas-Mexico border.

The threat - and follow-thru - that came from Eddie Lucio, Jr. will now be logged in that Great Book of Border Politics, a tome that perhaps awaits a similar entry to do with his own name at a date yet to be announced. In the meantime, Lucio swims proud.

The deep end of the ocean is his...

I agree that politics here are al about ego and envy. The lucios are at he top of the list, like Oliveira and hinjosa and those losers. Good story.

ALL:...We have so far rejected some 13 obscene comments directed at that osbcure Harlingen blogger known for attacking this blog. We will still post relevant info about him as it becomes available, but we're not all that interested in him anymore. His blog has lost readership and is now relegated to the back row. Maybe if he concentrated on serious news stories and not this blog, well, maybe his readership would improve. We're done with him as fodder for our material. The dwarf joke has grown old... - Editor

I love the way you have Chapaneco wrapped around your finger. You make him squirm and he reacts. It makes him look stupid. But he doesn't get it. Everytime he posts crap about the Tribune, The Tribune wins! He is a LOSER and has always been one!

I do not believe any public road, structure or building should be named after any living person. In my opinion Lucio is out for what Lucio can get and that makes him a pouch of pus in my book. On the other hand, more and more dirty laundry about Solis is comming out everyday - no, his name should not be on any buildings, except on the fron of his cell door.

Good post, The Lucios are no better than Jim Solis. Solis got caught in a web of greed. The other bastards will have their day.

Why are the Lucio's sucking up to Bill Card, the former Harlingen Mayor.
I served with him in a board and he once told me, he didn't believe in naming buildings after people.
I say, Lucio wants the Anglo vote. The Lucios never do anything for free, there is always an angle.
By the way, thank you Mr. Paz-Martinez for your well thought out articles. It is a pleasure to read the Tribune.

You take the high road by ignoring Tony the hemorroid Chapa. He is not in your league or of your class. That homosexual thing he has ging with JAKE is a disgrace, but jake did write about doing Chapa's wife. Oh, well. the poor will always be the poor.

Chapa is back at his mess. press release, press release, press release. THAT BLOG IS DEAD!!! No readers cause there is no writing. LOL!!!

Chapaneco is hopeless. He should write the Maryland apts. story. Any news on the hitman who killed your son-in-law, Chapate? of course not.

Luisa asked; "Why are the Lucio's sucking up to Bill Card, the former Harlingen Mayor?"

They might be sucking up to the Republicans but they are not sucking up to Bill Card. Former Harlingen Mayor Bill Card passed away sometime back.

Heriberto said...

Luisa may be speaking rhetorically. You know mentioning what Card stood for?

Anonymous said...

Who is saying former Mayor Bill Card was a great man? He wasn't.

Anonymous said...

Bill Card was a very good friend of Frank Boggus. that says it all.

Luisa said...

Mr.Anon: I am aware Mr. Card passed away, he was well liked among the Anglos and Hispanics.
My comments regarding Lucio and the naming of a building after the former Mayor leads me to believe he didnt know Mayor Card very well.
Otherwise he would have known, Card didn't believe in naming buildings after people.
I think Lucio, by naming this building, is trying to win the Anglo vote should he run for Senator, as it was reported at the coffee shop last Saturday.

Agree, I think Chapapote should be completely ignored. The Tribune has too much class to be lowering it self to myharlingenews level.
I have noticed even King Canute is not blogging there anymore, good for Kingi.

El De Los Fresnos said...

Good for King Canute. But Kenneth Benton is still there. and he wanted to be mayor! Sounds like Benton is writing off any future race by hanging with Chapaneco. Oh, well.

Interesting observation. those cameron county demos are a crazy bunch and Lucio is the ringmaster of that circus. you got that right!

Valley politics, haven't changed much, Lucio, Oliveira are still in office, carrer politicians if you ask me. As are many of Hidalgo County politicos.
Maybe this coming elections will change the landscape.

Poor Benton, he is writing just about anywhere that will allow him to spread his message.
Did I read a post from Nacho Libre somewhere. He is back, good, now if we can get him to post here at the Trib. it will be okay.
I hate to say this, but Benton can't win as Mayor. Harlingen is to damn racist, man this damn town like the VMS are prejudiced. Sorry Kenneth, but is the truth, and you know bro, just ask Rubio.

J. Santiago said...

Rubio was an idiot that put up campaign signs that were hand painted by grade-schoolers. He spent less than $500 on his campaign. He would have spent more but he couldn’t find many backers. He runs for office to stroke his own ego and because he has a vendetta. Bento ran for office to stroke his own ego and, many believe, to promote his grandiose plans from which he would profit. It seems to me that Nacho ran because he hates Anglos.
