HARLINGEN, Texas - The queer side of the Kori Marra enigma is that she appears to be a woman interested in public service. She smiles alot. She seems to enjoy her place at City Hall, and she'll have her say at the microphone when she thinks it's due. Taking that into a cccount, it's a mystery why her reputation in town is that of an amateur politician - someone who just can't seem to bridge into being a do'er, a role model, a uniter.
Word from the streets has it that she'll have plenty of opposition, with at least one local political action committee already on record as saying it will spotlight that contest, with the sole mission of defeating her at the polls. Ultimately, the voters will decide.
But here's what she wrote to us recently, after we posed a series of questions to her via the same lines of communication. We have not altered her words or repaired her grammar:
I have had my responses edited by blogs before. I have only responded to Jerry Deals on a few occasions because I know that he will only run them as I write them.
I have not responded to you before because I have seen some of your writings and honestly, they have appeared to be very harsh in their content. My criticism has come from those that have nothing positive to say about me no matter what I say. Lets be honest, no matter how much I might wish I had nothing in common with certain folks, there is ALWAYS something we can agree upon.
Let me ask this…did you get responses from any of the other commissioners in regards to these questions?
Politics is a strange world. Often, it dictates the uttering of certain verbiage or demand certain actions, and does not allow for a steady flow of personal excuses. But, at the local level, in a small town like this one, perhaps that is a bit more palatable. Sooner or later, however, making excuses turns into whining and moaning and groaning. Voters are keen. They love a scrapper and disdain an introvert. They want to see their own take on the perceived bad guys, to do battle with critics, to not fold at crunch time. Eventually, they will craft their own assessments and, when confronted with a recalcitrant elected representative, opt for someone new.
But Commissioner Marra must surely know that...

I think she's a fighter so maybe she won't lose. It will depend on how she goes about it. That district elected her for a reason.
agree that she may win again. If they like her in district 3 they will elect her again. no brainer.
I think it's 50-50 for her unless she makes a big mistake between now and election day.
HEAT, has other issues on it's calendar , Marra is just a fish in the pond, that must be extricated.
What we know, is that she will supported by the old guard and probably HCLC.

The election will be won on the trenches, money just won't buy the elections anymore, Korry has to much baggage. IF HEAT can pull this one. They don't need money, just a lot of ground work.
Korry is afraid to speak, because, she doesn't think when she says things.
The election is 13 months away, we shall see, what I have noticed is that "none" of the Commissiners are speaking to the constiuents. They need to do that.

Commissioner Marra is her own worst enemy. she should speak out more, especially when criticized. that's why she lost Jerry Deal's support, cause he said she lied to him. But I agree with her that talking to Tony Chapa would be a huge social come-down for her.
She does what she has to do apparently. what else can you say. maybe that's what Harlingen deserves, tho.

I think it will be hard for people to trust her again.
She has a lot of negatives. wears a gun, drinks, doesn't pay her taxes. the only positive is that she hates Chapaneco.
It will be an interesting fight if HEAT applies the heat. Joe Rubio does not like Marra.

HENRY:...We have monitored Chapa's toy blog for the past year and have come to the conclusion that there is nothing there for the educated brain. He's a high school graduate, is what we're told, so maybe that's why he offers so little. Chapa's secretarial blog is nothing more than a tapeworm of press releases (which are free and can be had just by asking for them from the entities who avail them, such as law enforcement) and Bible verses. It's easy to see that The Tribune writer knows his way in reporting. What you see here you won't see at any other local Blog. Chapa is kindergarten compared to the Trib. Yes, I'd say this blog gives everybody a fair shake. It writes news as it is and it doesn't take sides. Well, except that it is against wifebeaters, drunks and deadbeat dads. From what I have read here anyway. I enjoy it myself.
