AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

Good info. Thanks and thanks to Mr. Rey for helping. Looks like those people are doing more than okay.

Anonymous said...

the cost of living in Brownsville says these people are overpaid. Sorry, but true.

Anonymous said...

That maintenance guy makes that much money? Outrageous!

Ralph said...

exeellent story. Good info too.

I think the mail guy is way way overpaid. How can that be? the mail? Do you need a college degree to coordinate the mail? crazy!

Henry said...

I don't think it's just a guy taking mail to the post office, is it? Yes, seems a big salary for that. How much does a teacher make?

Sessi said...

My goodness, some of this people are making a very nice living, I make around $63.000.00 and I do okay, well up to now, I am okay. And this men and women make over $100.000.00 no wonder the school is going broke.

Mary Lou Tovarez said...

Mr. Editor, Juliet Garcia, TSC president, makes $368.000.00, a year, now what could she do to deserve so much money?? What???
I am self employed and I work my buns off and make in the low 60's. What a rip-off.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Editor, didn't mean to insult teachers, because I know they have real hard jobs.
It is the administrators that get such outrageous salaries. I heard from teachers that Principals don't even visit the classrooms.
I guess, tax-payers need to say something. Thanks Rey for bringing up this matter.

Pipon said...

Easy, on educators, they are not to blame. It is the administration as the editorial points out. That is a lot of money paid out every month. In the Valley to top it off.

Anonymous said...

How do they justify it? That's what I'd like to know. the mail? Maintenance? Gimme a break!

Gloria said...

Good post, you hear about all these things, that is untill you see them in print. Juliet Garcia makes over a quarter of a million dollars a year, for a school that graduates 16% of the attending students, and has the highest tution fees. Unreal!!

Ann Garcia said...

I attend UTB, but now I take on line courses. Their were days when you could hear the shooting noises. So I quit driving to Brownville.

Sessi said...

UTB/TSC, I attended both schools back in the early 80's, back then it was okay, but I got my BA from TWU in Denton.

Edelmiro (miro) said...

Wowweee, no wonder the schools are going broke. That is a big pay roll chunk, I wonder how it is in Harlingen.
The superintendent in good old Harlingen makes $200.000.00 lots of mula.

I wager to say, about the same, all schools operate the same way. Some may pay a little less and some pay a little more. But if Harlingen is mired in politics, like Brownsville, I bet it is pretty much the same.

Anonymous said...

IF YOU LOOK AT THE PAY CHARTS, YOU CAN TELL THE THAT MAKE COMPADRES MORE MONEY:

CHECK ALL THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIAPLS,
CHECK ALL THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPALS,
CHECK ALL THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS.

Anonymous said...

"Compadres make more money", of course they make money, just look all the problems the BISD is having, and all the Insurance crap, that system is to big to dismental, not that it make it right.
The county commissary is a mess, over paid staff at bisd is a mess, tsc/utb is a mess, harlingen politics is a "holy" mess, brownsville politics is another mess. The tax-apyers need HELP!!!

Anonymous said...

At the moment the whole world is a messy, crappy situation.

The eve of distruction all over again, this damn crazy world is exploding. Crazies, greed, hate, killings in HARLINGEN, drugs, teen preagnencies, alcoholics, drug attics, prostitution in La Placita Harlingen, tent city in Harlingen, overpaid staff at every damn city in the Valley.
Chamapapenco, has a shady past, like fast eddie on the buck.
Wooowwwweeee, Mr. EDitor, keep the Tribune and your good articles going. You are numero uno, I don't what "El Cobarde" champanenco says.
Bother Jonesy is back.....

ANONS:...We agree wholeheartedly with the comments being posted on this topic. Brownsville is not Dallas, is not Chicago, is not Miami. Its educators also are smart enough to recognize that the cost-of-living in the poor bordertown is not what it is in the Big City. They should volunteer to take salary cuts. These salaries are obscene. Perhaps the schoolboard should also be blamed. No, not perhaps...they should be blamed for creating an employment environment that favors the few over the many. Teachers are right - they are not appreciated and they are woefully underpaid... - Editor

I would admire one of these moneygrubbers if they steped up and said they would take a paycut. But they won't do it. Greedy educators.

Brother Jonesy has Harlingen pegged. But we can raise all the hell and it still won't change. We need new leaders, top to bottom. Keep writing, Bro.

Brother Jonesy said...

"Harlingen Properly pegged", while in Ohio, I was reading the Bargain book called VMS, and the way that town is run, operated, and people discriminated. Hell, brother Jonesy, thinks Harlingen should move to Missippi, or even North East Texas. OOOHHH, man, they are bigots, Ironically, they are white, damn poor, but prejeudice as hell. Heck, they are racist with their own kind. Brother Jonesy was given an eviction noticed after Brother Jonesy wanted to preach at a flea market.

Anonymous said...

That's too wild, Brother Jonesy. So, what brought you to the Valley? Women?

Brother Jonesy said...

Full name is Raymond Bufford Jones, people know me, as brother Jonesy, and my traveling companion goes by the name Margarita Laura Aldan, from the state of Chiapas, Mexico.
Mr. Anon, I was living here in the Valley, before I went to be around my own kind, but they didn't like Margarita so hell, I came back, to live in the Blue Town area. And believe me, I have no desire of chasing women, or looking for women. I am loyal to my Margarita, see I am 6ft 2 inches tall, and Margarita is only 4ft 2 inches.
Anyway, I have change my evil ways, and now I read the Gidion's Bible. I drink a little Gin and Tonic, and wine for medical issues, see I weigh 280 lbs.
I blogged before at this fine, very good and honest blog, and I plan to write on issues as long as the good editor allows me.
You will recognize me when you see a 1989 Chevy dully, the paint is kind of faded. With several Bibles in the dashboard, and heck needs a washing.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Brother Jones or Jonesy, maybe you can preach to the elected officials, not to destroy the educational system. The bas*&*^ds have destroy everything else.
Drive your pick up and head to Austin and do some preaching at the State Capitol.
I don't want to be sarcastic, but preaching at the local flea market. Sounds kind of odd, many of those places sell stolen stuff.

Ray B. Jones said...

I was living at a trailer park owned by a flea market owner, one side of Jasper Texas. And this particular Sunday, the sermon was about teen preagnancies, people got upset, when I told them: "there were more white teens preagnant and in welfare than any other race in America."
My good friend Billy Ray Jones, called me a lying preacher, and two days later, I got the eviction notice. Had no choice but to leave. I swear, people in this areas are tea party goers, fly all kinds of flags with snakes, and they believe in the bible and saying grace, folks it is crazy, crazy, out there.

Sylvia Gomez said...

Mr. Editor, maybe Mr. Jones ought to move to Treasure Hills in Harlingen and start preaching to the K/M people, he sounds like their kind, you know Boswell, and the HCLC. The Rotarians, oh boy, they would love you.

Anonymous said...

Is it true Juliet Garcia is resigning from tsc??? Good, maybe they can bring the tution down. It is expensive to attend class at tsc/utb. The book store, kills you with the book prices. Darn, no wonder people don't attend college, it is to expensive.

Anonymous said...

Man Brother Jonesy, you have lived a checkered past. But I hear, Ohio is a very nice place to live.
Why don't you and Margarita's ville, give it another try. Just think, anglos all over the place, tea party goers, wallmart, flea markets, plenty of trailer parks. Bible stomping christians, who hate everyone, oops, was I speaking about Harlingen, or Ohio, I forgot.

Anonymous said...

Man, I am going back to school and get myself a degree, and get me high paying job, in Brownsville. Heck I could live with $94.000.00 year.

Anonymous said...

Brother Jones, how old are you?? I bet you are around 60, I bet Margarita's ville is around 23, with one kid. Chiapas sounds about right. There are a bunch of them here in the Valley. Most of them with kids and work as waitresses. No offense preacher Jonesy. You aren't related to Junior Bonner are You??????

I hope the international community, helps the country of Japan. That radiation stuff is serious. I work in a hospital and radiation unrestrisctic, can kill a lot of people.

Anonymous said...

Yes, those poor people, water damage homes, no food, no water, no utilities, no transportation. That incident was similiar to an atomic explosion. They need economic help.

Anonymous said...

Brother Jonesy, besides preaching at flea markets, what do you do for a living???
Harlingen has a tent city, I think you would fit there just fine. I mean help out all those poor souls, you know, right up your alley. Please considerd it, and if possible send a picture of you and your lovely traveling partner, to the Tribune.

Anonymous said...

So, how does Harlingen compare to Brownsville on all this? Interesting.

Anonymous said...

Well Harlingen pays MR. Flores the superintendant a mere $200.000.00 a year, Brownsville pays the top man, $198.000.00. Harlingen, has a Mayor who was a city commissioner for 12 years, didn't do diddly squat. Pat Auhmada hasn't move the city forward in 4 yrs.
Compadrismo, is king in every aspect of politics, whether county, city, school or state goverment. City's in South Texas are no different. They are all the same.

And so the story goes like this, I hear tell, a director in Hidalgo County hire a secretary, who couldn't type a memo, but her dimensions were 34 26 38. I guess with those numbers who needs schooling.

Aurora G. said...

Anon, I guess if I went to school and received a degree, unless I knew someone in the school system. I couldn't get a high paying position??? I forgot, in Brownsville everyone is related, or son compadres. OOOPs San Benito here I come.

I agree with Aurora G. the same thing happens in San Benito, Harlingen and Brownsville, in hard times we have to get the movidas out of the taxpayers payroll.

And so the story goes like this, I hear tell, a director in Hidalgo County hire a secretary, who couldn't type a memo, but her dimensions were 34 26 38. I guess with those numbers who needs schooling.

What happen to Brother Jonesy, the wife send him to do the washing??? Brother Jonesy, there are plenty of trailer parks in Harlingen, and plenty of Dollar Generals and loan companies all over the place. Living in Blue Town or La paloma is like living near Aurora, Ohio.

Homer said...

Easy.... on Brother Jonesy, Brother Jonesy, I hear they rent trailer park spaces north of Raymonsville, for $165.00 a month. I hear in Corpus Christi they rent for $150.00. Have you considered moving further up North.
I would donate the first $25.00 dollars.

I would like to thank everone for being so helpful. Deciding where to live is important, some have suggested Ramonsville, others Corpus Chrsti others, have suggested Ohio.
Even Harlingen was put on the list. I am taking all those places into consideration. Someone at the flea Market on Sunday morning suggested Alaska. I don't think the old truck can make it that far.
But everything is being considered.
I have lived a checkerd life, I am a sinner. But, my traveling companion has guide me into the road of redemption.

Godspeed, dude. Hope it all works out.
