AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

The Man Who Wouldn't Quit:...John Wood Won't Give Up the County Judge Ghost...He's Still In It...

By HARGIS BONNER
Special to The Tribune

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - They say politician John Wood doesn't have a give-up bone in his tall, lanky body. They say his decision to not concede the recent county judge's race against incumbent Republican Carlos Cascos, which he lost after several recounts, comes from his headstrong approach to politics. As the year ends, Wood is stubbornly hoping for a miracle.

"Yeah, he's still in it if Cascos dies between now and January 1st," said a resident of this poverty-stricken town as he downed a beer inside a downtown bar. "Wood would be county judge if Cascos couldn't take the office."

That may or may not be so, but why Wood won't concede defeat is the mystery.

"He's a politician, man," said another drunk. "He should know that you win some and you lose some. What the f...? The guy's making a fool of himself, man."

Cascos won the contest after a bizarre string of events that saw County elections Administrator Roger Ortiz first hand the victory to Cascos, then to Wood, and then back to Cascos in a series of moves being called "The Immaculate Deception" here.

"Who knows what really happended?" asked a well-hipped woman accompanying two fat guys drinking Bohemia at a corner table alongside a dusty jukebox playing a Rigo Tovar tune. "It's old news, is what I say. Let it go, dude. Go fishing, or plan the next election."

Wood has been incommunicado for the most part. Other than telling a local newspaper reporter that he is not yet willing to concede, Wood has stayed under the news radar. Some say he is "just sticking around the ballpark" in case something happens to Cascos.

"There are those who say the Democratic Party that endorsed him has dropped him like a dogmeat taco after the humiliating loss," said a strolling guitar player who ambled into the bar and began strumming a Cuco Sanchez song. "I believe it. Our politicians are heartless bastards. Heartless!"

Cascos, meanwhile, is said to be ready to take the oath of office on New Year's Day. Criticized viciously for driving to Ortiz's house and parking across the street from the elections administrator's home while the vote count was in question, Cascos reportedly has not been back on that street since that long, tense night - much to the relief of the Ortiz household...

Oh no,!!! Hargis Bonner, no wonder Patrick left town. I knew it, something in the air.
Not to be sarcastic Alcatraz, but, was Hargis after you, for messing around with his brother's wife.
Confession is good for the soul. Hargis Bonner is a big fat overweight man, that will fit nice in the landscape of the Valley. Puros viejos pansones.

Easy... girl, not everyone is fat and wears yellow shirts like Hargis Bonner, remember Jr. Bonner, look like beef jerky.
Some of us guys work out daily and have six packs in our mid section. How about sending a photo, or posting one on myface. Sofia, are you pleasently plump?? Or are you on the thin side, inquiring minds want to know.

Get lost and get a life, you are probably offended porque estas gordo.
As for me, I am okay, otherwise, I wouldn't be able to be critical.
Hargis Bonner, is overweight, I remember on a picture on this web-site. He dresses cowboy style, probably a drug store cowboy. Well, I don't know, he is from Colorado.
I just didn't think he could write. sofia

Hey, what happen to Alacatraz, is he mad at his bloggers, he has been kind of quiet. And now most of the articles are written, by cowboys, like the one from New Mexico, and Hargis Bonner, and that awful looking Kermit. He looks mean.
Glady's have you heard anything about Patrick. I think he said he has left the Valley. Or is he in hiatus. Untill, Hargis leaves the Port Isabel.

Hey Gladys and Sofia, you know Patrick said he was looking for local writers to fill in while he was out of town and I personally think this blog definitely needs the feminine point of view on the local stories. Why not pitch something at him to counterbalance all these lonesome cowboy types he's got writing in? Your viewpoints are just as valid and it's time they were heard and counted. M

M, are you kidding, he will probably give me "F", Alcatraz, likes perfect written papers. I don't know about Glady's I hadn't heard from in a while.
But you are right, it wouldn't be such a bad idea, to get a woman's point of view, on many of these articles. Or have a woman write a good article about her views on some topics.

Sofia, Patrick is nowhere and everywhere. Just look and you shall see the dear boy.

I would volunteer in putting in the woman's touch on the blog adventures. But, usually late at night when I start imbibing of the wines, I start to crave a woman. And I find that it will interfere with my writings. But can I suggest the dear M?
