AMERIQUE:

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

Cops Hunt For Missing El Rocinante Editor...

BROWNSVILLE, TX - Fans of the popular blog El Rocinante have been camped outside the local police department since late yesterday morning, all of them lugging suitcases of questions for city detectives to do with the strange and mysterious disappearance of its gregarious editor - Dr. G.F. McHale-Scully.

"We haven't heard squat from Jerry since Tad Hasse lost the County Treasurer election," said resident (and barber) Lester "The Molester" Cantu. "We don't know whether it is foul play or just Jerry being Jerry. But we're here, and here we'll stay."

An ever-flowering blog quick to damn and whip, El Rocinante has been silent for two days following Tuesday's election. Idle observers here and in neighboring Matamoros, Mexico believe El Rocinante's leader may have been too depressed by the election results. Most of the candidates the site endorsed lost, and lost badly. Nothing has surfaced in the local print daily and people in the streets say they have never seen El Rocinante go silent for such a long period of time. "McHale was somewhat down after O.J. Simpson was acquitted and he hated George W. Bush to the point of mania, but he always pressed onward, always led the charge for the good fight," said Loretta "Legs" Bazaldua, a waitress at a downtown cantina. "Now, it's dead air around here. Pity."

Police were said to be going around to the town's bars and one detective told this reporter he'd heard McHale's car had been spotted on Pimp My Ride, a cable-TV show popular with owners of battered vehicles seeking free repairs. Arnulfo "El Cebollas" Palacios, identifying himself as "a drinking buds" of the blog's editor, said this: "I know he likes to get away from himself, or that's what he says, but I don't know what that means. What? No, I haven't seen him lately."

According to the police chief here, officers have instructions to be on the lookout for McHale-Scully.

"It's a frickin' mystery of Jimmy Hoffa proportions," added a local photographer who requested anonymity but whose name is Brad Doherty.
