A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It is the unspoken statistic, but it is as real as anything to do with the lingering U.S. war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the military, 1,800 American servicemen have killed themselves since the initial invasion of Baghdad. That is in addition to the more than 4,000 who died in battle. This week, families of the soldiers who committed suicide asked President Barack Obama to change the government policy of not forwarding letters of appreciation to mothers and fathers of these servicemen. By week's end, the White House had reversed the policy and agreed that such letters are needed, as well... - Eduardo Paz-Martinez, Editor of The Tribune

No Brownsville Lad in This Year's NFL Draft

By LaCandrelle Jefferson
Staff Writer

BROWNSVILLE, TX - Savvy oddsmakers in Las Vegas and London are betting former Porter High School QB Billy Garza will not be selected by any team in next month's National Football League draft. Garza, who signed out of high school with the University of Illinois and later transferred to lowly Texas A& M-Kingsville, is not on the radar screen for pro scouts.

"He should've stayed at Illinois and competed for the starting job," said a scout for the Dallas Cowboys. Garza set some passing records at the smaller school, but failed to draw the attention of any pro agents.

In Brownsville, Garza's career has been ballyhooed by non-offending blogger Juan Montoya and no one else. ElRrunRRun.com has not mentioned Garza's draft status, however, and likely never will.

"There has never been an NFL player from Brownsville," said a former editor for The Brownsville Herald. "They just don't have the skills around here. Garza may as well look to Arena football, if that. The NFL is a tall mountain and our players down here are usually short and squatty, easily blocked and tackled by the tougher, bigger boys who play elsewhere."

Added Max Maxwell, who writes for ElRocinante.com: "You could get Vince Lombardi to coach kids around here and even Vince would fail. It's just a hobby here, a flirtation that excites with every season and eventually disappoints. You can bet on local football players ending up as convenience store clerks. It happens."

The top quarterbacks in this year's NFL draft are Colt McCoy of the Texas Longhorns and Sam Bradford of the University of Oklahoma.

Did Maxwell and the writer from el Rosinante ever played football, I meant flag football maybe, it is usually loosers that never strapped, shoulder pads and a helmet and mixed it up with another player that are so critical.
May I add, being a writer for el rosinante or for this blog or the Herald aren't big accomplishments, becareful when you throw stones, they might just hit you.
May I suggest something, "how about a night out": With DP-M at the 1-2-3 lounge a place best suited for the two writers. This would be the highlight of their life. They know this and I know it to.

A night out with DP-M? He'd accept that only from two women in Brownsville. They know who they are. And, no, not that waxing dragonfly Moon Goddess who pines for DP-M on Montoya's non-offending Blog...
